National Urban Innovation Stack (NUIS)

The NUIS aims to catalyse transformative collaboration in the urban ecosystem through establishing a shared digital public good. NUIS will strengthen the capacity of the urban ecosystem to solve complex programs quickly and at scale by unlocking the power of urban data, build capacity among all actors of the quadruple helix, driving discoverability and collaboration between urban stakeholders, and enabling responsive and data driven governance.

NUIS is designed to provide the foundational components that are required across various urban programs in India. NUIS is a nationally-shared digital public good usable by the urban ecosystem to drive transformation. The stack is designed to bring a holistic view across multiple urban verticals and enable
rapid creation of diverse solutions in the urban sector.

Digital Blueprint

The NUIS Digital Blueprint, was developed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) along with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and published on the NIUA website. This blueprint aims to revolutionise the urban governance and offers a comprehensive, scalable framework to address the challenges of over 4,400 urban local bodies (ULBs). The blueprint’s stack approach includes design principles, standards, and architectural layers to promote interoperability and reuse of digital solutions. Key components are user-centric, ensuring scalability, data privacy, and security. The framework supports multi-tenancy, enabling shared infrastructure. It emphasizes data governance for consistent, trustworthy data, fostering data-driven decision-making and collaboration among stakeholders to improve urban life in India’s cities.
